Notes On a Bus

It's been a while since I've made an entry here. Generally, I've been crazy busy with work and cadets, and since my vacation started a week ago, laziness. A lot's happened in the past few weeks, but more on that later.

As it is, at the moment I'm on a bus heading to Edmonton. It's nice, leather seats, plug in for the laptop, tray tables. Most importantly I don't have to do the driving. Red Arrow coaches have improved since the mid '80s when I worked there washing buses for the summer. The coaches then were pretty nice, they're way nicer now. If you need to go to Edmonton, I'd recommend them if you're not driving.

The reason for my being on a bus is that I'm heading off on holiday. I'm heading to Edmonton so that I can catch the Canadian east to tour around a bit. I've bought a Canrail pass and will see where it takes me. It's good to get away, my life is way to regimented as it is and a vacation where I'm not bound by anything but the train schedules will be nice. The only down side is that Mrs. Evil can't come along as she has just transferred positions at work and is in training. I am jealous of her though, as part of her training she gets to ride in the cab of the train.

So here I sit, watching the countryside roll by, not having to worry about the traffic or anything for the first time in months. This is going to be nice.

Anyhow an update on what's kept me from blogging for upwards of four weeks. First and foremostly, June is, as you can imagine, a busy time in the school biz and it was busier for me as I was also pulling double duty as cook for the first two weeks of June. This was followed by two weeks of catching up on a couple of months of paper work. It's all done now and I don't have to be at work again until August.

Some of you may recall that I mentioned that I was being sued. Well I went to the pre-trial conference and the judge was totally unresponsive to my point of view. Now keep in mind, before I went to the conference I had conferred with other lawyers who were of the opinion I had a decent chance in court. Unfortunately once you get in front of a judge it's all a crap shoot. My adversary, ever the professional, even made disparaging remarks about my honesty. No wonder lawyers have the reputation they do. At least he didn't get his interest or court costs, and I probably ate up at least two hours of his time so it probably cost him money for his mistake. Just not the three grand, oh well.

My unit's annual inspection also happened in June, a good event where the cadets showed what they've learned. I got to promote some of them (it's good to be the CO) and awards were handed out. The rest of the month has been filled with endless small cadet things with cadets heading off to summer training. Was working on the paperwork for one of them up to yesterday (she got the call for training at the last moment as she left today). The boat can get along without me for a couple of weeks now and it will be nice to not have to worry about that.

Well it's time to sign off and get back to watching the world roll by and listening to the 'ol I-pod. I'll update here as my trip progresses and there's time.
