Given Harper's theory that with the natural disaster in Japan and the trouble in the Middle East there shouldn't be an election, here is a list of Canadian general elections that shouldn't have been held due to troubles that were directly or indirectly affecting Canada: Directly affecting Canada:

1925 - Charlevoix-Kamouraska earthquake
1930, 1935 - Great Depression
1940, 1945 - World War 2
1953, 1957, 1958, 1962, 1963 - height of the cold war
1993 - Bosnian war
2004, 2006, 2008 - War on Terror in Afganistan
2008 - Global economic crisis
Indirectly possibly affecting Canada:
1872 - 7.2 earthquake in California, Great Boston Fire
1878 - Russo-Turkish war, England anticipates war with Russia.
1882 - trouble in the mid east, specifically the Anglo-Egyptian war
1904 - Russo-Japanese war
1908 - earthquake and tsunami in Sicily
1911 - Mexican revolution
1935 - Hitler re-arms Germany
1949 - Berlin airlift
1957, 1958, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1968, 1972, 1974 - Vietnam war
1968 - Arab-Israeli war
1979 - Iranian revolution
1984 - Iran-Iraq war
This leaves the federal elections of 1867, 1874, 1887, 1891, 1896, 1921, 1926, 1980, 1988, 1997 and 2000. So if elections were called on the basis of "Harper's it's not a good time" doctrine, Canada would have had only 11 elections since Confederation, the last in 2000 and most prior to 80 years ago. This is indeed another sign of how much contempt Stephen Harper and his supporters have for democracy. Harper and his Conservatives are dangerous and need to be stopped while Canada still is a democracy.
