Cracks starting to show in Harper's party. The sailing hasn't been smooth for the good ship Harper. Not only has the economy taken a nose-dive that Harper didn't foresee and is being taken to task for it by former Bank of Canada governor David Dodge, but his party's rapid attempt to protect sitting MP's has even former Tory MP's crying foul. Add to this a scandal about the Harper Conservatives attempting to take over student unions so that clubs supporting rival ideologies get de-funded.
Yet another Facebook changeI am starting to get tired of the seemingly constant user interface changes over at Facebook. The current "improvement" now has a seemingly endless litany of updates from everything cluttering up the homepage. Having just figured out the changes from the previous "upgrade" the prospect of having to learn a new UI just aren't appealing to me. Especially since they're likely to change it again in a few months anyways.

Bumper StickersDuring the last bust a bumper sticker was quite popular here in Cowtown:God, please give us another oil boom, we promise not to piss it away next time So since we've managed to piss away yet another oil boom I was thinking we need new bumper stickers.
Calgary whines, Liepert yawns.It never ceases to amaze me the intellectual twists and turns an Alberta Conservative supporter will do in the interests of party loyalty. Earlier this week provincial health minister Ron Liepert caused a small uproar when he called Calgarians a bunch of whiners for complaining about the level of health care in this city. The next day on CBC's Calgary Eyeopener's political panel, the staunch Tory was all aghast that Liepert would say such a thing, being unable to fathom why the minister would call Calgarians whiners. What the staunch Tory failed to realizes is that Liepert said what he did because he could.
I've been busy again.As you may have noted I haven't done a lot of posting here since December. Mostly I've just been busy with other things, life getting in the way of blogging as it were. Part of it is also that I've moved my City Deepsky Project from a topic on this blog to it's own wiki. This has kept me busy for the past little while generating much of the content for it which is an ongoing task. It does mean that those of you picking this blog up on the Newdemocratsonline aggregator won't need to read all about my observations of an astronomical and non-political nature.
What are these guys on?It seams that conservative Sun columnist Neil Waugh is putting his appointment to the senate in jeopardy by suggesting that Albertans won't vote Tory. This comes on the heels of similar comments by Alberta premier Ed Stelmach in the run up to the first ministers' conference. With comments like these coming out of their mouths one has to wonder what they are thinking?

So now what?With the prorogation of parliament, we now have a time of relative quiet in Canadian politics. With Harper's "I had to destroy democracy to save it" move of shutting down parliament, it remains to be seen if the coalition will be able to survive the recess. That being said, this bit of breathing room has not only bought Harper another month in office, it has also allowed the opposition to get some of their ducks in line. In that sense, that act of desperation on the part of Harper may still work out against him.
